How Much Does BJ’s Wholesale Club Gas Cost?
UPDATE (9/16/2023): As of this update, gas prices have reached a national average of $3.871 per gallon, according to AAA. Prices have been steadily increasing over the past few months, but experts believe that they’re peaking.
For this section, we’ll use the GasBuddy website to check several BJ’s locations and their gas prices and see how it compares to the competition.
In Madison Heights, MI, the BJ’s location offers a per-gallon price of $3.94, which is also the lowest price in the city. Interestingly enough, this price tag ties with BJ’s two main competitors, Costco and Sam’s Club. The highest prices in the top ten come from Exxon, Marathon, and BP at $4.19.
In Roanoke, VA, BJ’s is once again offering one of the lowest prices in the city at $3.94 per gallon. It’s the second-lowest price in the top ten and is only beaten by Walmart at $3.92 per gallon. Also, BJ’s price is tied again with its main competitor, Sam’s Club. On the opposite side of the top ten, Exxon, D&G Mart, and GB have a per-gallon price of $3.99.
Moving on to Jacksonville, FL, BJ’s Wholesale Club also offers competitive gas prices at $4.13 per gallon. This time, its main competition Costco and Sam’s Club, have lower pricing at $4.09 per gallon. The highest price in the top ten comes from Exxon, 7-Eleven, and Murphy USA at $4.22 per gallon.
Lastly, BJ’s gas prices also fared well in Johnston, RI, with per-gallon pricing of $4.29 and placing in the middle of the top ten. The lowest prices in Johnston belonged to Roadrunner and Mutual at $4.09 per gallon, followed by Cumberland Farms at $4.19. Meanwhile, the last place in the top ten is Shell, with its per-gallon price of $4.39.
Overall, BJ’s gasoline prices are some of the lowest in many cities we’ve looked at. Not surprising, considering you need to be a member to use BJ’s pumps, ala Costco and Sam’s Club.
Is BJ’s Wholesale Club Gas Good Quality?
Right off the bat, BJ’s gas is not Top Tier. This can be a dealbreaker for some people, especially when one of its main competitors, Costco, is a Top Tier gas retailer. However, we’ve been looking at customer feedback and online forums, and we haven’t found any significant complaints about BJ’s gasoline products.
Unfortunately, we could also not pin down where BJ’s got its gas. Although BJ’s operates as an independent, unbranded gas station, the company may be sourcing from major gas retailers like Mobil, Chevron, or Shell. Like most gas stations, we suspect that BJ’s also doesn’t source its gas from a single oil company.
How to Save on BJ’s Gas Prices with Fuel Saver Program
BJ’s gas pricing is generally 10 to 20 cents lower than the national average. Therefore, like other wholesale warehouses that sell gas, you can only access the special member pricing if you’re a BJ’s Wholesale Club member.
Non-members are still welcome to pump their gas at BJ’s gas stations, but they’ll have to pay for non-member pricing. In contrast, Costco won’t even let you pump gas if you’re not a member. There are several membership tiers, but the most basic one will cost you $55 per year. Once you can become a member, you’ll enjoy some of the lowest gas prices available at BJ’s.

How BJ’s Fuel Saver Program Works
The neat part about BJ’s Fuel Saver Program is that it allows you to stack your savings by simply buying certain items from the warehouse. It’s possible to accumulate your savings, so you only get to pay 2 cents per gallon which is the minimum required purchase.
Basically, you’ll get a 10-cent off per gallon discount for every purchase of an eligible fuel-saver item. These items can range from laundry packets to microwaveable popcorn to vitamin supplements. For example, buying the Persil Active Scent Boost, 225 oz, gets you a 10-cent per gallon discount, and purchasing the Aleve 220mg Naproxen Sodium Caplets, 320 ct nets you another 10-cent off with a total of 20 cents per gallon discount.
The BJ’s Fuel Saver Program’s product list can be found here. Moreover, the featured items are frequently rotated, and they’re valid as fuel-savers for a limited time only.
However, there are some limitations to this fuel-saving program. Although you may stack up all your gas savings and redeem them in a single fill-up, there’s a minimum 2-cent per gallon purchase price for all transactions. In addition, discounts are only applicable up to 30 gallons per redemption.
Finally, make sure you plan your fill-ups accordingly because all gas savings are only valid at the end of each calendar month. You can’t roll over your points over the next calendar month.

Tips on How to Save on Gas Prices
Unfortunately, soaring gas prices are just something we have to get used to. If you’re still looking to hit the road, here are some quick tips to help you save on gas prices:
- Track prices – There’s no shortage of apps that let you track gas prices in your areas, such as GasBuddy and AAA TripTik. Even if the difference may not seem much between stations, you’ll be surprised at how much it can add up.
- Use cash – If you can help it, use cash or a debit card to pay for your fill-ups. The per-gallon price for credit card transactions is usually 10 to 15 cents higher than cash or debit. Although some gas stations will charge you with the credit card rate when using debit.
- Plan your routes and schedules – Plan your routes and errands as much as possible to cut down your driving time. For instance, you can shop for groceries after work instead of doing it during the weekends, which will take you another trip.
- Sign up for rewards programs – Many major gas station chains have loyalty or rewards programs that offset a few cents per gallon at the pump.
What’s the Deal With Current Gas Prices? [UPDATE 9/16/2023]
As per Yahoo!, gas prices in 2023 have reached their peak, with the national average hitting $3.87 per gallon, as reported by AAA. This surge is attributed to US crude prices surpassing $90 per barrel for the first time since November of the previous year. However, there’s a silver lining for consumers. Experts believe that the introduction of less expensive winter-grade gasoline will lead to a decline in prices.
However, other oil-derived products, like jet fuel, are also witnessing price hikes. The continuous rise in crude is attributed to production cuts by major players like Saudi Arabia and Russia. Some analysts even speculate the possibility of oil prices reaching $100 per barrel in the near future.
